Mindelo
is a European city in look and feel. The colors of the azores adorn houses,
peopled by beautiful people. Their clothes are European chic and their
mannerisms match. To Joyce, it’s hard to consider Mindelo an African
city. Since her arrival she sees a country accustomed to the standard
of living in the United States.
“This is not the third world”
“But it is. You’re spoiling my great African pilgrimage”
“Oh please. Did I tell you about Sandra’s apartment?
“No.”
“She’s in the Peace Corps and she’s got an apartment
in a high rise with a security guard, two bathrooms, and a refrigerator.
She has two televisions. Granted she’s the exception, but talk about
Beach Corps.”
“It’s still the third world”
“Come to Guinea, I’ll show you the third world.”
